Put down the cellphone and back away

Cell phones are injuring and killing Americans. Studies have demonstrated that 10% of all fatal car accidents involve distracted driving and of the distracted drivers 18% were using a cellphone at the time. AAA says drivers using cell phones to text or surf the internet are two to eight times more likely to be involved in a crash than non-device-distracted drivers. The JAMA Otolaryngology journal found a spike in face injuries from cellphones. “Cellphone-related injuries to the head and neck have increased steeply over the recent 20-year period, with many cases resulting from distraction,” the report concluded. Orthopedists report increasing spine/posture deformities among the younger people resembling the “dowager’s hump” in the back. Another survey put electronic device distraction as the third leading cause of the decreasing average American life span.

We went to see a movie the other night. I sat in an aisle seat as I usually do because it feels a little roomier. Just before the feature was about to start, they flashed the ‘TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE’ message and a blonde from the center of the row jumped up and started working her way out. “Excuse me, sorry, oops, excuse me, pardon me.” By the time she got to me, I was trying to look around her and I was a little impatient, so I said, “Couldn’t you have done this a little earlier?” “No!” she said in a loud whisper. “I left my cell phone in the car.”

Signed up for Verizon’s MORE EVERYTHING plan. Got more taxes, more hidden fees, more time on the phone waiting to vent at someone from…

As the policeman approached the car he had just pulled over the man’s hand reached out the window and handed a cell phone to the policeman saying: “My lawyer would like to speak with you.”

I got a robocall from Joe Biden overnight and he used up all my minutes.
