Mac Megalomaniac
Donald Gorske is the holder of a Guinness World Record title again. He has further solidified his position as the individual who has consumed the most Big Mac burgers in a lifetime. Over the course of 2023, the 70-year-old consumed an additional 728 Big Macs, bringing his total count to a staggering 34,128 Big Macs. Don’s fame with Big Macs started 52 years ago, on May 17, 1972, as documented by Guinness World Records. He has eaten at least two of the burgers every day since 1972. Reflecting on his inaugural Big Mac experience, he said, “I am probably going to eat these for the rest of my life.” From that day forward, he diligently kept track of each burger, storing the cartons in his car and commencing his count from day one. He held on to the receipt from his order, as well as the burger’s container- something he’s continued to do with every subsequent order, amassing 50-years worth of McDonald’s receipts and Big Mac boxes. In the past 50 years, he has only gone eight days without his beloved burger. In 1982, he drove through a snowstorm to get his favorite meal, only to discover that McDonald’s was closed. Gorske also refrained from eating one on the day his mother died, as a way to honor her.
Don Gorske secured his initial world record in 1999. Initially consuming nine burgers daily, he later tapered his intake to two – one for lunch and the other for dinner. According to the organization responsible for verifying records, he used to make daily trips to McDonald’s to procure fresh burgers. However, since retiring, he now purchases them in bulk twice a week, savoring one immediately and storing the remainder for later consumption. Don’s dietary fame primarily revolves around his daily quota of Big Macs. In times of hunger, he supplements Big Mac’s with potato chips, fruit bars, or ice cream. He tried a Burger King Whopper in 1984, but steadfastly adheres to his beloved Big Mac, affirming, “When I like something, I stick with it all the time.”
Don’s love for Big Macs even played a role in his marriage proposal to his wife Mary, which occurred in a McDonald’s parking lot. Reflecting on her tolerance of his idiosyncrasies, Mr. Gorske expressed gratitude, noting, “She has put up with a lot of obsessive-compulsive things I do and hasn’t let my Big Mac thing get to her.” The most astonishing part is Don’s claim of never experiencing health issues despite consuming over 34,000 burgers. To uphold his well-being, he abstains from French fries accompanying his burgers and engages in a daily six-mile walk. “If I go for 40,000, that’ll take me another 14 years or whatever like that, and I’ll be 78 years old then!”
McHumor to go
I was at the McDonald’s drive-through this morning and a young lady behind me leaned on her horn and started mouthing something because I was taking too long to place my order.
So I paid for her order along with my own. The McDonalds worker must have told her what I’d done. While I waited at the second window, she leaned out her window and waved to me and mouthed…. “Thank you.” Obviously embarrassed that I had repaid her rudeness with kindness.
At the second window I told them I paid for both orders and took her food too. Now she has to go back to the end of the queue and start all over again!
