Dumpster diving for profit
Is this a great country or what???
Tiffany Butler, 34, revealed how she earned over $76,000 as a full-time dumpster diver. After each dive session, the Texas mom collects her findings and resells the products online. “You never know when stores are going to toss stuff – it’s really just all about luck,” Butler, who dumpster dives at least two or three times a week. Tiffany started her dumpster diving career nearly eight years ago. She has her own web site and sells her finds and even takes requests to help limit landfills and boost the poor folks lifestyles. In her most recent conquest, Tiffany uploaded a clip on TikTok showcasing how she found nine pairs of New Balance sneakers, premium water bottles, Logo T-shirts and socks. The items tossed in the garbage were brand new, with price tags attached. “A worker was coming back for that,” a watcher joked underneath the video.
Although some people may cringe at the idea of dumpster diving, Butler, who wears gloves when picking out her treasures has made a living for years. She remains strategic on the dumpsters she climbs into, having a preference for waste bins located behind high-quality stores. Butler has been diving through trash cans for nearly eight years and has found almost anything you can imagine. “If you can name it, I’ve probably found it,” Butler said. Many people online praised the Texas mom’s savvy money-making hack. “This is so stupid of the stores to toss things like this, especially when people are struggling to buy necessities.” “Definitely a good score and bunch of it is not cheap,” wrote another. “I’m glad you’re salvaging these things,” one person said.
“When it comes to valuables, I’ve found SO many things,” Butler told “In The Know.” She found six boxes of untouched perfect makeup even a $3,000 armoire or boxes of brand name new pet supplies, I have found so many awesome things I really can’t keep track of everything.” Tiffnay keeps some of the items she finds — for instance, she currently has “about 200 pounds of cat food for [her] kitties and litter for a few months” all from dumpster diving — she sells the majority of the items via garage sales, Facebook Marketplace and online marketplaces like Poshmark and Mercari. “I saw a video of a girl dumpster diving at Ulta, and I was shocked at the fact she found perfect makeup just thrown in the dumpster,” Butler said. “So of course I had go try it out for myself! I did my first dive in January 2017, and I found makeup. From then on I’ve been hooked!”
“Do you get in trouble if you get caught?” Despite many misconceptions, dumpster diving is legal in all 50 states. However, it can become illegal if you ignore warning signs, trespass on private property, pick a dumpster lock, or engage in disorderly conduct. “I just go every day and it’s a hit or miss,” she said. “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It’s part of the fun!”
