Dogs team up to escape
A group of seven dogs that were stolen from their owners managed to get free and set out on the long journey back home. In a story straight out of a Disney movie, the seven pups — including a corgi, a German shepherd, a Pekinese, golden retrievers, and Labradors — were spotted walking along a busy highway in Changchun, Jilin province in northeastern China last week, according to local reports. A man identified only as Lu filmed the pack as they surrounded the German shepherd, which appeared injured, while the corgi leader repeatedly cased their surroundings and ensured they all stayed close together. “They resemble a band of little brothers in distress, moving in unison — nothing like stray dogs.”
Lu said he tried to guide the pooches to safety, but was ignored, so he shared the video on Douyin — China’s TikTok — while other passersby and witnesses shared footage of the determined dogs navigating traffic and moving with purpose. Turns out, the dogs were all from the same village, “typically roaming freely together and having formed strong friendships,” according to the Bitter Coffee Stray Dog Base, which sent out several of its volunteers and even a drone to track them to assist with their safe return home. A volunteer claimed the suspected dognappers operated a dog-meat shop, while the animals are believed to have escaped their captors by chewing through a cage inside a truck, according to local reports. All seven dogs have since been returned to their owners, who came from three different homes, Jimu News reported.
The highway where Lu first spotted the dogs was about 11 miles from their village. In China, stealing a dog is treated as a criminal offence, with penalties ranging from fines to prison time depending on the animal’s value. The dogs have since become internet sensations, with videos shared on Chinese social media racking up more than 230 million views. In the clip, the furry septet is seen walking in formation along a guardrail on the side of the expressway. At one point, the homeward-bound canines surrounded an injured German shepherd as a Corgi at the looked around to see that no doggos had been left behind. A separate video attributed the pack’s coordination and synergy to the animals’ familiarity with one another, stemming from the fact that they hailed from the same village and interacted regularly before they were taken. Eating dog is not explicitly banned in China, although Shenzhen became one of the first cities on the Mainland to ban consuming cats and dogs in 2020.
