Hero Dog of the year
9 year old Antonio had the bad luck to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was caught in a drive by shooting and was so severely injured that part of his skull is still missing. After 5 brain surgeries, Antonio is now 12 years old and has frequent seizures and notable balance problems. Especially with a plastic flap over the back of his head instead of a piece of skull he has to be very careful. Enter the hero, Alice, a German shepherd, who performs heroic acts every day as she serves as Antonio’s constant companion. With two years of very specialized training Alice is able to detect when the boy is losing his balance and can even reliably predict 15 minutes in advance when Antonio will have a seizure. In both cases Alice and Antonino work to get him to a safe place before the incident. Alice was awarded the American Humane Hero Dog.

Two dog owners are arguing about whose pet is smarter. “My dog is so smart,” says the first owner, “that every morning he goes to the store and buys me a sesame seed bagel with chive cream cheese, stops off at Starbucks and picks me up a mocha latte, all before I get out of bed.” “I know,” says the second owner. “How do you know?” the first demands. “My dog told me.”
Q: What do you get when you have a dog that uses a calculator?
