Frans Hofmeester, Dutch filmmaker – and proud father – has compiled an incredible timelapse video that shows his daughter growing from a tiny baby well into her teenage years in just over four minutes. Frans began shooting short pieces of video of his daughter, Lotte, starting soon after she was born in 1999. These short spurts of video spliced together allow viewers essentially to watch the girl grow up before their very eyes. “I filmed Lotte every week from the moment she was born,” Hofmeester explains on his website. “She was changing at such a rapid pace, that I felt the need to document the way she looked, to keep my memories intact.” Frans says that he kept certain factors constant, like the white background and the baby blanket. Sometimes, he says, his subject wasn’t always an enthusiastic participant in his film project. The video starts with a cute new-born baby, then becoming a little healthier, spitting up and even teething. As the clip progresses, she is also seen as a toddler with different hairstyles with hairclips and ponytails. Eventually her baby teeth are gone and she is seen flaunting her retainers and braces. The video further shows the girl in her puberty and then becoming a young woman.
“Sometimes they did not feel like it. Then I said, Just one minute. Tell me about your ball game, did you win?’ That way I stalled them so I could complete the shot,” he explains. The video that shows how Lotte’s appearance changed from when she was just to baby to a young beautiful woman. From her hair color to her attire, everything undergoes a transformation and it’s just brilliant how this video wonderfully encapsulates each phase. The result of his dedication to the project is a stunning memorial to his daughter’s first years of life. “A video created by a father using photographs that he took of his daughter regularly until the age of 20.” The dedication that this took for both of them to establish a routine of this and then to stick with the routine for 20 years. It is amazing. Social media commented, “The dedication on the father’s part is more impressive.” Frans made a similar video of his son, Vince.
