Can you lift my Helicopter?
Imagine you are driving on an 8 lane freeway outside Sacramento CA and you see a helicopter trying to land next to you. That got a lot of attention, especially since the rotors were slowing down and it was obvious the airplane was losing control. Both sides of the freeway slowed and then stopped to watch the tragedy unfold and hoping they were not going to be under the bouncing helicopter. The pilot was able to get the bird to land in the median between the east and westbound lanes. That was the good news, the bad news was when the bird plopped it broke open and the pilot and one of the EMT’s got thrown out.
It was like watching a disaster movie in slow motion until the wreck settled and the crew laying on the ground became obvious. The REACH Air Medical Services flight was returning from delivering a patient to the UC Davis Medical Center when something mechanical went terribly wrong. Several people ran from the stopped cars to the scene and fortunately the Helicopter’s extra strong fuel tanks did not rupture. One of the crew told the crowd of drivers that there was an EMT trapped in the crashed plane. While this all unfolded, in few seconds a crowd grew around the plane. One brave volunteer said: Lets pick up the plane and the group was quickly transformed into a super hero force. Together, about 15 people pushed on one side of the plane and got it up high enough for responding emergency crews to pull the injured woman out of the bottom of the plane. Kenneth De Crescenzo, whose wife captured the video, was one of the citizens who sprung into action. “When it was coming down, I looked at it and said, ‘This isn’t good,’ but when people were needed, they all stepped up.” A pilot, a paramedic, and a nurse aboard the helicopter were in critical condition following the crash, but the quick actions of those on the ground likely saved lives. “In 23 years working for the Sacramento Fire Department, I’ve never seen a helicopter land on a freeway like this… it’s truly a miracle that nothing else happened,” said Sacramento Fire Captain Justin Sylvia.
“We would like to take the time to sincerely thank the first responders on scene, as well as the everyday citizen heroes that jumped into action to help lift an entire aircraft off of Susie so she could begin receiving immediate care at the scene,” the family of Smith said in a statement to the media. “It was truly amazing.” With the freeway shut down, first responders were able to use ambulances to access the wrong way on the freeway and get the helicopter crew back to UC Davis for treatment.
