Woof, it is almost a miracle

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has been at the forefront of animal rescue and protection since our founding as the first animal welfare organization in North America in 1866. ASPCA has been the leading voice in animal welfare, bringing the critical protection of animals to the forefront of society. Every year, our hands-on work directly impacts hundreds of thousands of animals, with our lasting solutions benefiting millions more.

Abandoned Pet Rescue (APR) is one of the largest no-kill animal shelters in South Florida. Since our founding in 1996, we have provided comprehensive care and helped more than 10,000 pets find loving homes. APR began as a small group of volunteers focused on trapping, spaying and neutering feral cats. Recognizing the need to help abandoned pets, we expanded into the full-service rescue we are today, housing cats and dogs. We have six free-roaming cat rooms with access to an outdoor “catio,” while our dogs enjoy individual, air-conditioned kennels and an outdoor play area. Our team of 25 employees care for the animals 365 days a year, and hundreds of volunteers help ensure the shelter’s safe and effective operation. On average, APR rescues 350 pets annually and facilitates about 330 adoptions plus 20 medical adoptions, which allows pets with special needs to be in a loving home while continuing to receive medical care from the shelter veterinarian. APR has an on-site clinic with licensed veterinarians and trained technicians to provide medical care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering and other general surgeries for shelter animals. When animals arrive malnourished, abused, or unwell, APR staff work to rehabilitate and nurture them so they can be adopted.

In the miracle video below Sprout the dog was found plopped in the middle of an intersection, so matted and tired she could barely walk. A driver stopped to investigate and then called police to rescue the dirty, tired, depressed animal. When rescuers brought her in, they removed over 32 pounds of fur, revealing a completely different dog underneath. From the clinic to her foster home and finally to her forever family, Sprout slowly learned to trust again. Her transformation is one of the most incredible recoveries, reminding us that every neglected pet just needs a chance to start over.

Dogs rescue people

Whenever my son goes snowboarding, I make him stuff hotdogs in his pockets…
That way the rescue dogs will find him first!

A guy walks into a bar and orders a glass of red wine. The bartender’s therapy dog leaps to his feet, races across the room, runs down the stairs to the wine cellar and within moments returns with a lovely bottle of cabernet savignon in his jaws which he drops gently at the bartender’s feet. “Wow, that dog is amazing,” the guy says. “What kind is it?” “Oh, he’s nothing special,” the bartender replies. “Just a bordeaux collie.”

I adopted a pet rock from the rescue shelter…
They told me he’s had a hard life.

Toward the end of their senior year in high school, students were required to take a CPR course. The classes used the well known mannequin victim, Rescue Annie, to practice. Rescue Anne was legless to allow for storage in a carrying case. The class went off in groups to practice. As instructed, one of the students gently shook the doll and asked, “Are you all right?” He then put his ear over the mannequin’s mouth to listen for breathing. Suddenly, the student turned to the instructor and exclaimed, “She says she can’t feel her legs!”

Q: What do Saint Bernards do as their final test at rescue school?
A: They get their masters.
