Magic Moose Lift
Clint Gottinger, owner of Rebel Towing, said he was going out to a road call Thursday evening when around the corner from his house he spotted an animal dilemma. It is Spring in Saskatchewan which means some of the ice under the surface snow was starting to melt. At the crossroad out of his neighborhood he saw a young moose that was bogged down in the water and mud just off the road as you see in the pictures here. Even little Moose weigh several hundred pounds and this one had gotten into the mud, got stuck and tried himself out fighting to get free. Clint knew the animal had been the for quite a while as he saw how tired it was. He wondered why his neighbors who had gone over the same roads had not called the Mounties or the fire department to help the beast get out of nature’s trap.
As Clint considered the sad situation, he knew his customers’ wait would have to continue. So clint stopped his trip and backed his flatbed truck carrier up to the edge of the road. He pulled one of the slings from the toolbox of the truck and tried to use it as a lasso to get around the Moose’s neck. By that time another neighbor stopped to watch and with his help they got a line around the moose’s butt and pulled it up onto the truck tilt bed. “He was so tired and exhausted. He just sat there waiting patiently. Clint pulled the Moose out of the water and then up on to the truck tilt bed.
Once the moose was out, the rescue took another unexpected turn. Clint called his wife for help. “I said, ‘Honey, bring out some blankets. I’ve got a moose on my truck.'” Clint left the exhausted moose on his front lawn covered with moving blankets for what turned out to be two and one half days. During that time, Clint said the animal had calmed enough to accept some affection. “He would let me go up and scratch his chin and rub his nose and his ears. He liked that he would turn his head,” Clint said. By Monday morning the moose had recovered enough to walk away on his own.
Even the motorists waiting on their own tow trucks reportedly did excuse the delay.
“Hopefully, he comes back because he still has a tow bill!”
