Don’t try that in a small town
An Oregon cowboy came to the rescue of a damsel in distress. Robert Borba was new in town. He, his wife and family had just moved into a ranch just outside of Eagle Point, Oregon. He had ridden into town to the Walmart with his truck and horse trailer. Robert was at the Eagle Point store loading dog food and a tent onto his truck Friday when he heard a woman yelling that someone was stealing her bike. In the spur of the moment, he grabbed his horse, Long John, from his trailer and galloped after the bike thief. He heard a woman yelling, “Stop him he stole my bike!” “I seen this fella trying to get up to speed on a bicycle,” Borba told the Medford Mail-Tribune. “I wasn’t going to catch him on foot. I just don’t run very fast.” He added: “I use a rope every day, that’s how I make my living. If it catches cattle pretty good, it catches a bandit pretty good.”
The bicycle was stolen from a bike rack outside a Walmart. The woman who owned the bike and several others gave chase on foot but were unable to catch him. So Robert did the logical thing he grabbed his horse, and galloped after the bike thief. He tried once to rope the crook on the bike and succeeded at knocking him off, but the guy wiggled out of the rope. Robert snatched his lasso back and chased as the guy ran on foot. Robert got the lasso around him again, but this time the thief could not wiggle out before Robert and his horse pulled the line tight. The perp, afraid he would be dragged back to the Walmart, grabbed a tree and would not let go.
So that is what police found when they arrived. Police arrested Victorino Arellano-Sanchez for theft. “When we arrived, there was a large crowd standing around a younger gentleman who was on the ground, the rope around his ankle, hanging on to a tree,” Officer Adams said. “I was laughing too hard to intervene,” he said. “I’ve seen it all, but I’ve never seen anything like that in my entire life.” One spectator said he would love to buy the cowboy a beer. “This guy should be our next president.” “The guy was just hanging back like ‘you ain’t gonna steal no bike in front of me’,” Adams said, “It appears he will be a good fit. Eagle Point is a small city, and people watch out for each other. That’s exactly what he did.” The owner of the bike was “just happy to have her bike back,” he added.
