Drinking Friends – Older than Humanity

Birds do it -bees do it – even monkeys in the trees do it drinking with your friends is not a purely human experience. For the first time ever, a team of researchers has caught chimps on camera while they share fermented fruit with each other. With the chimps huddled around the fruit, it looks astonishingly like a bunch of guys sitting around a bar table. Although it’s not unusual for animals to unwittingly eat fermented and alcoholic fruit, the chimp’s behavior is unusual. The apes don’t typically share their food — but they seem to do it regularly when it comes to alcoholic fruit. As this new kind of behavior was just recently observed, researchers aren’t sure what the tendency to share the fermented fruit means. However, they believe that it might be a way to enhance social bonds. In other words, it’s the equivalent of you going out for a few drinks with your friends to commiserate about life. Chimpanzees truly are more like us than we realize.

The research into chimpanzees and their social drinking habits was carried out by a team led by the University of Exeter, published in the journal Current Biology. To see what the chimpanzees of the Cantanhez National Park do. They set up motion-activated cameras. The chimpanzees would gather around fermented fallen fruit of the African breadfruit tree. In the videos, the chimps break the fruits apart. They then pass the pieces around to their friends, like handing out cold ones at a barbecue. However, the researchers saw the chimps repeat this communal feasting on 10 occasions. This discovery might show that getting hammered with your friends is a tradition older than humanity itself. There’s a “drunken monkey” hypothesis that posits that humans’ love of alcohol comes from our primate ancestors.

But wait! There is more!

A herd of 24 elephants was found in a deep slumber after reportedly guzzling water fermented by the intoxicating mahua flower. The sleeping giants were observed on the outskirts of the Shilipada cashew forest in India, surrounded by the broken remains of the brewing pots. “We also found that the elephants were sleeping. They consumed the fermented water and got drunk.” After trying, and failing, to wake the elephants, the villagers called the local forest department. By the way, bears get drunk as well usually by eating rotting fruit and grain spilled from railroad cars and farm trucks, but they usually do not share. Bad Bears!

An old sea captain was sitting on a bench near the wharf when a young man walked up and sat down. The young man had spiked hair and each spike was a different color…. green, red, orange, blue, and yellow.  After a while the young man noticed that the captain was staring at him. “What’s the matter old timer, never done anything wild in your life?”  The old captain replied, “Got drunk once and married a parrot. I was just wondering if you were my son!”

First drunk: “Do you know what time it is?”
Second drunk: “Yeah.”
First drunk: Thanks.”
