Flying Vikings
Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden, encompasses 14 islands and more than 50 bridges and is spread out on the edge of the Baltic Sea. One of the challenges is that the city center is on one island and the City Hall is on another and the suburbs are spread among other islands. So the Swedes know a little about boats. The Swedish capital currently relies on a fleet of more than 60 smoking diesel ferries, which serve as public transport for the 2.4 million people that live in and around Stockholm. As part of the new “Green” movement Stockholm will be getting a new Electric ferry (without the extension cord) that will carry 30 passengers in about one third of the current time from downtown to the major suburb island of Ekero.
The new ferry is expected to be the world’s fastest electric passenger boat and has been designed by Swedish startup Candela. Currently the commute takes 55-minutes by subway, car and conventional ferry, the new boat will cover the 9 mile route in 15 minutes, according to Candela. The electric ferry moves so fast with very little wake because it rides on hydrofoils, which lift the boat into the air giving the craft the appearance of ‘hovering’ over water. Even moving with a top speed of 30 knots or 34.5 miles per hour, Candela claims the new electric ferries will use 80 per cent less energy, be virtually silent and will slash operators’ fuel bills by 90 per cent. Sensor-controlled stabilization of the hydrofoils promises to make sea sickness a thing of the past. With a DC charging station, the vessel can recharge in less than an hour and cover a distance of over 50 miles on a single charge. The eventual objective is to roll out a fleet of Candela P-12s to replace the city’s aging diesel ferries.
Swedish smiles
Why do Swedish people love their country?
Because they have Stockholm syndrome.
This Swedish guy was walking up to a bus stop when he tripped and fell onto a woman’s lap. I lied. He wasn’t Swedish. He was a Laplander.
Have you heard about the Swedish mutation of Covid-19?
You have to assemble it yourself.
Nothing beats the Swedish summer…
it’s simply the best day of the year.
