Golfing in the street
You may have seen the picture that was Arnold Schwarzenegger supposedly filling a pothole in a California Street because the city took too long to fix it. He is not the only one. It takes forever for anything to get done — especially when it comes to city councils in England. A man so infuriated by the way his local council has dealt with “disgraceful” potholes on a busy street has decided to actually do something about it to speed up British construction. Ben Thornbury has ingeniously set up some “crazy pothole golf” on Malmesbury High Street in Wiltshire to showcase how brutal the stretch of road has become and force the hand of the Wiltshire Council.
“Wiltshire Council, you’re a disgrace,” reads a sign welcoming “golfers” to the unique course. “Fix the potholes. High street crazy potholes golf now open.” The street, chockful of small independent businesses, hasn’t been patched up for months and Thornbury said that people have been injured due to this neglect. Ben said that lose stones from the road have been getting kicked up by car tires with one hitting a shop window. Wiltshire Council responded to the gesture by telling Thornbury that they’d “been working hard to tackle the issue”, and that the Department for Transport’s Pothole Fund had recently awarded it £3.6 million to begin renovations. Ben Thornbury, 18, putt a smile on his neighbors’ faces after reading about how exhausted they are by the potholes riddling Malmesbury. Locals have for months on Facebook fumed about the ‘blight of lots of potholes’, raising fears about the ‘large stones’ that could be hurled at pedestrians. But last Friday, people pulling up to do their shopping at the north Wiltshire town’s high streets instead found a mini golf course. Being slightly more proactive than just pointing a pothole out and walking off, 20 residents took part in Ben’s bid to get the council to swing into action. ‘I’m really proud it was my idea. People were playing crazy golf in the middle of the high street while all the cars were coming past,’ the student said. Ben has been asked to bring the tongue-in-cheek courses on the road “playing golf in all the potholes” across the country.
The road to Embarrassment
Today, my friend warned a pedestrian about a giant pothole.
I guess that makes him a trip advisor.
I was driving my father and my grandfather got a rough country road. My experience in handling grandpa’s four-wheel-drive vertical made for a particularly bouncy ride. Embarrassed, I offered a lame excuse. “The sun shadows through the trees make it hard for me to see all the potholes.” “Don’t worry, Matt”, grandpa said. “Your getting’ most of them.”
Why is it when you pass by road construction crews on the highway they are all men except the woman was holding up a sign that says: “Slow Men Working.”
Why did the chicken start digging a tunnel?
So it didn’t have to risk crossing the road.
