Inter-Species Peace
In 2020, Lisa de Gunst became a cat owner when she got a ragdoll kitten, named Belle. As time went by, she often felt bad that Belle was left alone, so she welcomed another feline into the fold, in the shape of Alphie, a British shorthair. The cats were the ultimate duo, as Lisa, 33, told Newsweek that they were “completely inseparable.” But as well as the pair were getting along, it still felt like there was something missing for Lisa, who resides in The Netherlands. “My dream had always been to have a dog, but I just never really had the time for it before,” she said. “So, I just decided to go for it and get a dog, hoping he’d get along with the two cats.”
Earlier this year, Gunst brought home James, a 4-month-old dachshund. It was certainly a nervous time for Gunst, who anticipated tension and non-stop conflict between the new puppy and her resident cats. But to her surprise, it was the total opposite. Gunst said: “The cats were really curious about him, and it felt as if he already belonged here. They often play together and sleep next to each other also. When the cats want to come inside, the dog always runs to the door to let me know so I can open it.” James has formed an undeniable bond with Belle and Alphie since his arrival. Indeed, Gunst often looks over and “melts every single time” she sees the trio together. “I’m really happy they get along so well, it truly feels like a home full of love,” Gunst told Newsweek. “At first, I wasn’t really in favor of getting cats or dogs from breeders because there are just so many animals in need of a loving home. I’ve always wanted to adopt, and I’m still thinking about doing that someday.
On the other hand
A farm owner doesn’t plan on keeping any of her cat’s kittens—but her Great Pyrenees doesn’t agree with her decision. The heartwarming clip below, shared on Sunday shows the pup lying down on the floor, hugging all of the kittens as the cat mom lies next to him, giving his owner the side-eye as she tries to take them away. While cats and dogs have a reputation for being each other’s worst enemy, they can actually live together peacefully, and even become best of friends. A study, carried out by Italian scientists and published in 2020 in the journal PLOS ONE, surveyed 1,270 pet owners who own both a cat and a dog and found that the two species can easily cohabitate without much conflict. Almost two-thirds of the pets sometimes playfully “ambushed” each other. The way you introduce your pets to each other will likely determine what their relationship will look like in the future. Introductions must be carried out slowly and mindfully, by scent first. Angelika added: “This is why the Great Pyrenees is one of my favorite dog breeds. I’ve never met one that wasn’t a gigantic scooch monster. These big sweetie pies are all Falkor [a doglike dragon from the movie The NeverEnding Story] to me.”
