It’s not easy being green
Louise Sutherland knew her beloved pet Rio, aged three, was very, very pregnant and near a delivery time. When it was time for the delivery Rio was really straining, so Louise’ daughter tugged to help get the ninth puppy out. Rio was fine but very tired, Claire and Louise were shocked because the last puppy they pulled out was green. Of course they worried that all kinds of things could have gone wrong, but when they cleaned the puppies up. The last one was still very green. So they named him “Forest.” The Scottish ladies were concerned and started researching because they had never seen or heard of a green puppy. It is caused by a bile pigment called biliverdin that is found in the placenta of dogs which can stain the puppy’s coat when it mixes with the mother’s amniotic fluid – the liquid that protects her pups. “When we checked it out later, we found out it is very unusual. The color has faded quite a bit already and will be gone soon, I’m told.” Mrs. Sutherland has managed to find good homes for all the puppies but is planning to keep Forest for herself.
Trevor Mosher and Audra Rhys of Nova Scotia have been calling their new puppy “Fiona” (after the ogre princess from the film Shrek) and with one look at the dog’s fur, it’s easy to see why. Rhys and Mosher’s three-year-old valley bulldog, Freya, gave birth to seven healthy puppies, one right after the other. Shortly after Freya sat down to rest with her new puppies, the bulldog gave birth to one more puppy. This young canine was born surrounded by a black sac, distinctly different from the translucent sacs the other puppies had. As the married couple cleaned the last puppy off, they realized the canine’s light fur had a bright green tint. The pigment dyes the fur before the puppy is born, and the color fades after the puppy enters the world.
In a litter of seven blueish-gray French bulldog puppies, one caught this Louisiana dog breeder’s eye. The tiny puppy looked just like her brothers and sisters, except for one important difference. Her fur was bright green. “When I first saw the dog, I was like, I thought it was dirty or something,” the breeder, Mark Ruffin, who owns Big Rajah Bullies in Louisianna. “Though this is extremely rare, it can happen to almost any dog.” Green puppies have made headlines around the world. In 2012, a green-tinted Labrador retriever named “Hulk” was born in the U.K., But for now, Ruffin’s puppy, who he named Khloe, gets to keep her nickname as “the little green princess.”
