The passing of a giant

Cassius, a 18 foot long saltwater crocodile which held the Guinness World Record as the largest crocodile in captivity, has died, Visitors to Green Island near Cairns, Queensland, expressed their deep sadness, describing Cassius as “more than just a crocodile,” but a cherished family member. “He brought joy and companionship to his best mate George for over 37 years,” the post read. “Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.” Cassius was brought to the sanctuary in 1987 from the Northern Territory, where crocodiles are a key tourist attraction. He was captured in the Finniss River, near Darwin, in 1984 because he was acting aggressively and causing problems. Cassius earned his world record after the passing of a 20 foot crocodile, Lolong, in the Philippines in 2013.

“As an apex predator, this big crocodile was getting into all sorts of trouble, from catching and eating cattle to attacking boat propellers,” Marineland Melanesia’s representatives wrote on its website. “It is believed this is where and how he sustained his many battle scars, including losing his front left leg, part of his snout and around 15 cm [6 in] off the end of his tail.” Cassius was thought to be more than 110 years old. Cassius had been in declining health since Oct. 15, Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat said on Facebook. “He was very old and believed to be living beyond the years of a wild Croc,” according to a post by the organization, based on Green Island near the Queensland tourist town of Cairns. “Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.” The group’s website said he had lived at the sanctuary since 1987 after being transported from the neighboring Northern Territory, where crocodiles are a key part of the region’s tourist industry.

According to the latest news the current Governor De Santis of Florida used to own and run his own alligator farm. So not only does he have experience with horrible scaly reptiles, he’s also worked with alligators too.

I was going to cook an alligator for dinner…
But realized I only had a croc pot.
