The easy way
The clock in the big church tower in Grimsby, England has been stuck on 12:02 for the last 12 years. The vicar has wanted to get it fixed many times, but every time the complaints built up, the question was who would pay for the repair. It was not like just buying a new clock at Walmart. “The church had one or two engineers from big clock companies and they were starting at $53,000 to get it running again.” They even got a price from the company that took a year to rebuild “Big Ben” in London. The church, the tower and the clock are all well-known landmarks in the area and many visitors noticed and asked why the clock was still broke when they came to visit.
Finally, when everyone had despaired that the clock would ever work, a couple of local guys: 47-year-old cheesemaker Rick Haywood and 15-year-old student Jay Foley—decided it couldn’t possibly hurt to take a look themselves. “We found various dead pigeons gumming up the gears; some of the bearings were very dry. I think the main reason it stopped was age. When we went up there, all the gears and stuff were not in the right alignment. The minutes, hours and seconds all have separate sections, which were out of order. We got the dead pigeons out and it slowly ticked along after we greased it and cleaned it out.” The pair then used their mobiles to set the time for the four clockfaces on the tower. Jay said: “It is one or two minutes out difference because it took that long to tighten everything up.” Church warden Chris Daniel, 68, said: “It’s amazing because you would not believe how much hassle you get when a church clock is not working.” “We saved them at least $50,000 so I am hoping for a [church] meal invite,” Haywood joked. The church warden said that the colossal savings were hugely appreciated and that now they wouldn’t have to launch a fundraising appeal.
