Firefighters were called to a parking lot at Sydney Airport on Monday to find five cars had become burnt-out wrecks. The lithium battery, which had been detached from an MG – ZS EV, was identified as the cause of the blaze in the Airport Drive parking lot. Meanwhile on the same night in Penrose, a Tesla Model 3 caught alight after being struck by the debris from a truck in front of it. Firefighters from the Penrose Rural Fire Brigade luckily managed to extinguish the blaze. The driver and passenger inside were able to pull over and get out of the car before it burst into flames, with firefighters putting out the blaze in just over half an hour. From the start of this year up until the end of July, the number of EV battery fire is at 114. However, the source said the real figure would be ‘double’ that number in NSW alone. The source said the problem is technology advances have leapt ahead of regulation and laws. Multi-story carparks were built to withstand fires started by conventional vehicles, not those started by “a thermal event caused by battery breakdown.”
The most important thing EV drivers needed to be aware of was not overheating the battery. Thermal runaway, as it’s known, is when the battery uncontrollably overheats, and is not able to cool down. ‘It’s like a snowball going down a hill. The key is you never want to let the battery get past that temperature,’ ‘Once you get past that temperature, even if you extinguish the fire, it can still reignite hours and even days afterwards if you haven’t cooled it down.’ Dr Priestley said Another issue with the batteries is that when they’re on fire, they emit toxic emissions ‘you don’t want to breathe’. ‘Getting close to the battery isn’t just a fire risk, it’s also a toxic gas risk.’ Lithium-Ion batteries, when faulty or damaged, can over-heat and have the potential to explode violently, resulting in fires that can reignite once extinguished and sometimes take days to burn,’
Meanwhile in Denmark:
The owner of an Electric vehicle was concerned about the amount of charge left in his battery for the drive to work in the morning. Electric cars can struggle to perform as efficiently as they normally do during the winter months, as their batteries tend to drain at a faster rate in cold and rainy conditions. He knew that cold batteries meant less power. So creatively he put his kitchen toaster under the battery in his car to keep it warm overnight. And it worked, tht battery was very warm. The battery burst into flames and destroyed the carport and burned the adjoining house.
In Florida:
Hurricane Ian earlier this year not only brought wind and rain to most of the state, but it also brought a storm surge that pushed the level of the Gulf above flood stage in some areas. “If you own a hybrid or electric vehicle that has come into contact with saltwater due to recent flooding within the last 24 hours, it is crucial to relocate the vehicle from your garage without delay. Saltwater exposure can trigger combustion in lithium-ion batteries. If possible, transfer your vehicle to higher ground,” the agency said. On the Gulf side of Tampa a red Tesla caught fire in the floodwater, charred to a crisp after the battery was compromised. “If you have an electric vehicle, and it flooded with saltwater, please do not keep it inside of your garage or right next to your home. It is susceptible to spontaneous combustion,” said Pinellas County Emergency management. “We know that the saltwater from storm surge can compromise these batteries, causing fires which cannot be easily suppressed. The best fire teams can do is keep water on the battery until the fuel burns out. If you’re evacuating and leaving an EV, or other lithium-ion powered devices like scooters or golf carts in your garage, you’re creating a real fire threat for your home, your communities, and first responders.
