The Army of Finland was having maneuvers and as the convoy charged through the tundra a reindeer wandered into the middle of the military exercise. The first troop carrier swerved which caused the second carrier to collide with it. The crossing reindeer caused a pile-up of armored vehicles with 12 soldiers rushed to hospital. Twenty-eight people were travelling in the two vehicles during defense exercises on Tuesday. Lapland is home to up to 340,000 reindeer especially prone to run onto roads as they try to escape the clouds of mosquitoes that descend on the region’s forests during summer. Some herders spray glow-in-the-dark paint onto the antlers to help see them.

Where is Rudolph when we need her

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers until after they give birth in the spring; therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa’s reindeer, every single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen- had to be girls.

You have the original eight reindeer: Dasher, Prancer, etc. And of course, there is Rudolph which makes nine. The 10th reindeer is Olive. It says so right in the song:
“Olive the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names”!
