Moose on the loose
If a moose feels threatened by your presence, it does one of two things. Often the moose simply leaves the area to avoid the threat. But sometimes it responds aggressively to make you leave the area instead. As a general rule, if you are causing the moose to change its behavior in any way, you are too close. Even if the moose appears undisturbed by your presence, you must still be able to evade the animal should it abruptly charge you. “You should be far enough away to get behind the nearest tree before a galloping horse could get there.”
Shelly Thorburn lives in Montana. She let her two dogs out to run in their back yard near the woods. Somehow the dogs barking angered a mother moose who had been walking by with her youngster. So mama moose decided to teach the little yappers a lesson about hospitality and started to chase the dogs right up to the back porch of Shelly’s house. Shelly heard the ruckus and went out leaving her children inside to settle the dogs down and now mama moose had a bigger target for her ire.
The battle was on as Shely yelled at the moose and tried to collect the dogs and the moose tried to run over Shelly. You will see in the video below, fortunately Shelly was smart enough to keep the pillars holding the roof over the back porch between her and 1600 pound perturbed monster. But Shelly really wanted to protect her dogs. Every time the mama moose backed off Shelly called for and ran after the yapping dogs. When she left the porch Mama Mosse came after her. Finally Shelly went back into the house and got a can of bear spray and was able to send the frustrated maternal monster back to the woods. Shelly scooped up the dogs and ran inside.
Good thing because her neighbor lady was getting her rifle ready to take the shot. Not too long ago, two male moose had even attacked the Weinermobile on a country road. The Weinermobile was injured but kept its good taste.
