The snake Grandmas
Peggy Van Gorder and Beth Koehler were interviewed on Fox TV about their adventures as part of the Python Roundup in Florida earlier this year. Both of the ladies are well over 30 and do regular homemaker and grandma stuff except when they are pursuing their hobby, capturing pythons in the Everglades. They got hooked on snake hunting for something different to do instead of just hanging out at the park. They talked to some folks that are regular snake hunters and got the bug. The python round up offered a $10,000 prize, though the ladies did not win, they had a great time. 106 Burmese pythons have been captured throughout the Everglades National Park in Florida. Pythons remain an invasive problem in the area, having killed most of the small mammals that used to live there. More than 1,000 people from 29 states registered for the removal challenge. A team led by Sarasota resident Daniel Booth took home the grand prize of $5,000 for killing the most pythons, taking out 33 of the total 106 snakes caught during the challenge, according to the release. Booth’s team also won $3,000 for capturing the longest snake: 15 feet.
