Superbloom?
Death Valley in California is the hottest place and the driest place in North America, but right now the desert is carpeted in wildflowers in what is shaping up to be the best bloom in a decade. It is the best event the site has seen since 2016, with swathes of the desert transformed and covered in golden and violet flora. “Rather than struggle to stay alive during the desert’s most extreme conditions, annual wildflowers lie dormant as seeds.” “When enough rain finally does fall, the seeds quickly sprout, grow, bloom and go back to seed again before the dryness and heat returns.” Pretty flowers bloom in the sunshine of Death Valley National Park in California in early March. The trigger was an unusually wet autumn. Record rainfall of 2.41in hit Death Valley in the autumn of 2025, soaking seeds and washing off their protective coatings to trigger sprouting, followed by a dramatically wetter winter that provided the steady moisture needed for root development.
Low-elevation flowers are expected to persist until mid-to-late March, with higher elevation blooms predicted from April through June. While some have used the term “superbloom”, the park itself is cautious about the label. Park Service officials noted that although there are not as many flowers as in past superbloom years, there are far more than most years. Parts of the park are awash in wildflowers, from the cheery yellow blooms of desert gold to the bright purple clusters of sand verbena, along with many other species. “This area that’s known basically for hot weather, sand and dirt has just become this amazing landscape of colors,” says David Blacker, “The smell is just amazing.” When photographer Elliot McGucken heard about the possibility of a superbloom this year, he hopped in his car and drove about 1,000 miles from Montana for a chance to capture it. “If the superbloom went off and I missed it, I would forever regret it,” McGucken tells PetaPixel’s.
It’s complicated. According to the Park Service, there’s no official definition for “superbloom,” though the park service uses it to describe “conditions when so many flowers are present that they appear as swaths of color across the landscape, rather than isolated plants.” Naomi Fraga, a botanist at the California Botanic Garden said this year’s event constitutes a Superbloom is “in the eye of the beholder.” The park reminds guests to leave wildflowers in place, so that they may produce seeds for the next season. Death Valley also experienced another unusual event this winter. Lake Manly, a temporary body of water that occasionally forms in Badwater Basin—the lowest point in North America—made a rare appearance in December.
