Hey Neighbor, have a bite

Vilnius residents celebrated Neighbors’ Day hosted on the last Friday of May every year and inviting people to gather, socialize and sit around a shared feasting table. This year, 18 spaces in the city turned into cozy community courtyards, with plenty of food, music, and entertainment. The event was organized by “Vilnius – European Green Capital 2025” in partnership with communities and municipalities. “Neighbors’ Day is a great opportunity to get closer to the people who live next door and to create an environment where everyone feels safe, welcomed and heard. After all, community often starts with a simple greeting and can eventually grow into sustainable, city-changing initiatives, such as community gardens, things’ swaps or workshops.”

The Neighbors’ Day celebration was packed with activities for participants of all ages, from children to seniors. Courtyards were decorated by soap bubbles, filled with live music, dances, and chess competitions. Little ones enjoyed animators, decorated cookies and posed for snapshots. The program was unique in each location – this helped reveal the community’s distinctiveness and create the exceptional ambience. An equally important part of the celebration was the potluck dinner with residents sharing their homemade dishes, recipes, and stories. The shared table became not only a place for feasting, but also a symbolic invitation to get to know each other and build community spirit through sincere, everyday interaction.

On one particular day every year, you have to walk for a mile if you want to hand the salt to diners on the opposite side of the banquet table, because a mile long table was set up between two adjoining villages. The annual Courtyard Festival takes place and groups of friends, family, and colleagues bring tables out to the city center, join them together, and lay down white tablecloths, candelabras, and flower arrangements before sitting down to a meal. At the 2022 Courtyard Festival, which took place on May 20, dozens of Ukrainian flags twitched in the spring breeze beside the Lithuanian ones, and two lengthy blue and yellow ribbons streamed down the front of the city’s most famous landmark, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel.

Neighborhood Humor

Neighbor: “I’ll have you know our lawyer has a $50,000 retainer!”
Me: “Wow, how bad are his teeth?”

My Roomba accidentally went out the front door, and the neighborhood animals immediately started attacking it.
Nature abhors a vacuum.

I think my neighbor might be stalking me.
She’s googled my name a few times, I saw it through my telescope last night.

Nothing makes you more tolerant of a neighbor’s noisy party…
than being there.
