Wildlife gone wild

Researchers last week captured and killed the largest Burmese python in the Florida Everglades. The 17-foot, 140-pound female snake was devastating wildlife. The state has also sponsored removal programs with prize incentives and regular public hunts. Since 1997, populations of raccoons in the Everglades had dropped 99% opossums 98% and bobcats 87%. “Marsh rabbits, cottontail rabbits, and foxes effectively disappeared.”

A little girl goes into a pet store and asks for a wabbit. The shop keeper looks down at her, smiles and says: “Would you like a lovely fluffy little white rabbit, or a cutesy wootesly little brown rabbit?” “Actually,” says the little girl, “I don’t think my python would notice.”
