Xiang Renxian was blessed with long hair that lasted. As a girl it was her pride and glory, but she could not stay young Chinese girl. As she aged, she began to fear her beautiful locks would dry up and lose their luxurious radiance. So she had to do something. The 60-year-old retired teacher started saving pieces of her 28 inch long locks that she collected as they naturally fell out. Xiang said she got the idea at 34 years old as a way to preserve the long hair of her youth. She has been collecting her hairs daily and recording the exact number since January 1, 2003. It took her 11 years to meticulously collect the hairs, then spun them into workable yarn. Each thread required 15 hairs to spin a knittable strand. Xiang has woven a sweater and matching hat for herself using more than 110,000 strands of her own hair. “It’s actually not that difficult. The key is patience and persistence,” said Xiang. The sweater cuff bears her name. According to Xiang’s records, the nearly one pound sweater is made from exactly 89,112 hairs and is decorated with 18 knit roses.
The retired teacher said: ‘Throughout my youth I was always famous for my wonderful long hair, and as I grew older I realized that, just like my looks, my hair was losing its luster. ‘I wanted to find a way to preserve that and came up with the idea of using my beautiful hair to create something for my husband. ‘It took a while to perfect the techniques, it was only when I was 49 that I started work on this project. “Whatever happens to my hair in the future, I now know that this will always be there as a reminder of my youth and the many good memories my husband and I shared in that time.” When asked what the next item might be she replied: “This project is finished now, but I will carry on, I am just imagining what the next item could be.” In addition to her sweater and hat, Xiang also knit another hat for her husband as a reward for supporting her hobby.
