That is a Friend indeed
“Way, Mal,” Lynn Arnold says so softly that it can barely be heard. But “Malley” her sheep dog is off in an instant, crouching behind the sheep with her mouth open. The sheep bunch together, complaining, but Malley keeps at their heels and brings them to their pen. The crouching position of border collies is unique to the breed and makes them the best herding dogs there are. The border collie is widely considered to be the most intelligent dog breed. Although the primary role of the border collie is to herd livestock, the breed is becoming increasingly popular as a companion animal. In this role, due to their working heritage, border collies are very demanding, playful, and energetic. They thrive best in households that can provide them with plenty of play and exercise, either with humans or other dogs. The breed’s herding trait has been deliberately encouraged. Border collies are descendants of the European black wolf and were used as herding dogs there in the early 1800s. The dogs are medium-size and they have such a strong herding instinct, he said, that without sheep or cattle to organize, they will take to herding leaves, cars, flies, children–anything that moves.
A sheep dog, named Casper, works on John Wierwiller’s farm in Georgia to protect and direct his flocks. One day, Casper guarding the sheep, ran into a pack of coyotes. When John went out to the field to check on Casper and the flock, he found eight dead coyotes and even parts of Casper’s tail and his fur. But Casper was nowhere to be found. Casper had managed to keep the coyotes at bay from his sheep and killed eight coyotes in the fight. Following the dogfight Casper ran away and suddenly vanished for two days. ‘We knew he was hurt and we were worried.” John said. He sent messages to the surrounding farmers on social media asking for people to help find Casper. Two days later, Casper returned with his injuries clearly showing. The dog had gaping wounds to his neck and side. ‘He was kinda looking at me like, ‘Boss, stop looking at how bad I look, just take care of me,” John explained. “It looked like a coyote grabbed his skin and peeled it right off.” The LifeLine Animal Project stepped in to help raise money to cover all of Casper’s hospital bills, managing to generate $15,000. The sheepdog is still being cared for by veterinary staff at the organization more than a month after the attack. John said, “I can’t even explain how good it is to see him right now, because I felt like there was no way he was going to be alive when I saw him.” Casper will remain under the care of the LifeLine Animal Project for several more weeks before being allowed to return home.
