You can’t see me

In Oceanside, CA a burglar was arrested early Friday morning in the ceiling of Dr. Peggy’s dental office in a strip mall. It seems a career burglar needed dental work or was really confused when he triggered the burglar alarm and thought he saw police cars coming to the scene. He did what most seasoned burglars do, hide in the drop ceiling. Officers searched Doctor Peggy’s shop and adjacent businesses but could not find any sign of the burglar’s exit. So they sent their new mini drone up into the crawl space through the open ceiling tile. The drone quickly located the perp laying on the ceiling grid covered in insulation trying to feign sleep. Oceanside officers coaxed the man down. In the process the burglar almost broke through the ceiling grid, but was saved from crashing to the floor by wires stretched across the ceiling.  The burglar surrendered without incident.  Authorities identified the suspect as Karlos Jordon, a 36-year-old Oceanside resident who had an outstanding warrant connected to separate incidents.

Oceanside police just started their drone program last fall. Drones allow police to not only fly inside drop ceilings, but fly above crime scenes and major traffic accidents. Police can see the problems of the call without getting through the crowds and debris allowing faster, better  response. Drones can also be equipped with thermal cameras that will find burglars as well as lost children from the air before searchers can even get to the scene. Remote scene surveillance also saves police and emergency workers extra steps and hazards as they try to make their way to the scene that requires their help. Drones also can see in the dark and using infrared lights and cameras to examine large or small closed spaces allowing police to see the suspect, before the suspect can see them. Drone camera photo’s are admissible as evidence in court, so before police are on scene and before any evidence is hidden or disposed of, the crime details can be recorded.
