Hero Family Cat

As pet parents, one of our worst nightmares is having our babies swept away by wild animals in the night, never to be seen again. Lane Dyer had a pet parent’s worst nightmare almost came through. Lucky for them, however, there was an unlikely hero in this situation. KCAU-TV of Sioux City provides the video below of this for everyone to see. Binx the protector cat deserves all the recognition in the world! In the video, there are two main characters: a Havanese, Oakley, and a black cat, Binx. As the pets are sitting outside, coyotes run up on them, attempting to drag the little dog away. Lucky for her, though, her cat bestie is there to scare the coyotes off, and her and her sister are able to go back to living life. We can’t see where any of the humans in this situation are, though I’m sure if they’d been there to see it, the kitty would’ve had some backup!

According to Lane, she’s totally okay now; she wasn’t severely injured in the attack, and neither was her protector. The vets did say Oakley may lose a limb when they first saw her, but she’s healing up nicely; now all she’s got is a funky haircut and a crazy story.  Iowa does have a pretty large coyote population, especially in more rural areas. Coyotes were something to be genuinely concerned about, especially since we’d see a lot of “missing cat” signs, and reports of neighbors’ chicken coops being raided were frequent.  Even if you don’t think coyotes are going to be an issue, you should always be prepared. Keeping garbage cans or anything else a coyote could use for leverage when jumping is vital to keeping them out. Beyond that, the best way to keep a coyote away from your yard is to ensure that you don’t leave anything that smells like food out for them to find.

Here is a solution that one Florida woman uses to protect her little dog from coyotes and hawks: A spike encrusted armored vest. The metal spikes stop the coyotes from biting her little dog. Hawks and Eagles can come swooping in from above for a quick little meal, but the big pink plastic spikes on the vest stop and confuse the birds of prey from getting a grip on the dog or cat.   If you see a coyote in your neighborhood, you should call animal control and report the sighting immediately.

Coyote howls

What do you call a Coyote with Stockholm Syndrome?
A Dog.

Why are coyotes howling in the night?
Because they can only see the cactus in the daylight.

Long ago a Coyote explained to his son, “Eat a man and you’ll be fed for a day,
Roll over and play dead and you’ll be fed for the rest of your life.”

Why are coyotes howling in the night?
Because they can only see the cactus in the daylight.
