“Out damned snakes, Out I say”
Snakes had been a consistent problem for this guy, “Mr. Smith.” While Smith owned and lived in the house, he got by knowing there were snakes in the basement. He rented the house to a family that did not like snakes either. It was a big old Maryland house, 10,000 square foot and had basement with some spots where the snakes could hide and keep warm in the winter. The tenant had the idea that he would fumigate the snakes by having a charcoal fire burning in the basement and the carbon monoxide laying on the floor would take care of the reptiles. While that sounded logical, it did not work and the tenant gave up and left the house. Mr. Smith had to do something to get rid of the snakes before he or anyone else moved in and he liked the idea of a cheap charcoal fire to fumigate the beasts hiding in the basement cracks. So he started another fire, apparently minus the metal grill most people would have used. He left the house and sometime later got a call from the fire department as his classic house was pretty nearly devastated by the fire. Seventy-five firefighters were needed to put it out. Then firemen did find a bunch of dead black snakes, even one that survived the fire and building’s destruction. Smith’s loss was estimated at $1.8 million.
Sneaky Snakes
Why would the world have been a better place if Adam and Eve had been Chinese?
Because they would have eaten the snake instead of the apple.
What’s worse than a box full of snakes?
A box that was SUPPOSED to be full of snakes.
Scientists here in California have discovered a rare species of legless lizards. Now don’t confuse that with spineless snakes; those are called congressmen. That’s totally different.
One time, the entire class gathered around the cage and, in complete silence, watched as
the feeding took place. “I’m jealous of the snake,” the instructor said. “I never get the
class’s undivided attention like this.” A student answered matter-of-factly, “You would if
you could swallow a mouse.”
