Fast food everywhere
When you think of fast-food hamburgers around the world you might think of McDonalds, or even Burger King. Japan has their own homegrown fast food burger chain, it is called Mos Burger. Mos Burger opened its doors to the public 50 years ago. They even had their own logo cartoon character “Mossan” (ala Ronald McDonald) who made its debut in 2009. Mossan has appeared on in-store signage, packaging and as part of the character toys included with kids’ meals. After 50 years Mossan has been replaced with a much more western looking Pillsbury Doughboy type logo, but the company has also added to their menu.
Chances are “chicken” isn’t the first thing that comes to mind for a good number of customers. That lapse is something that Mos Burger is looking to rectify with a Moschikin awareness campaign. And what better way to get people’s attention than with a contest and a big giveaway? Moschikin is a chicken breast deep-fried in rice flour for a uniquely crispy texture and seasoned with Japanese-oriented seasonings such as soy sauce that pair well with the rice flavor of the coating. It’s also cut in such a way that the end of the wing is still connected. As a result there’s a little nub that sticks out with a single piece of chicken wing bone. This allows you to firmly hold the chicken while eating and not having to worry about other bones in the meat. What prize do you give away to promote a hand held piece of chicken?…With a sleeping bag in the shape of a huge piece of Moschikin. The sleeping bag wing bone acts as a head cushion! In addition to the chicken sleeping bag and bone pillow, this breaded bedding also comes with a Moschikin eye mask, so nothing will interfere with your most succulent dreams. If you register on their app you can be one of 500 lucky customers that wins a Moshicken sleeping bag. You can have the comforting rice breaded feeling all night. Our friend in the picture is demonstrating how comfortable that pillow of herbs and spices make him feel. Winners will be chosen in late November and are expected to receive their sleeping bags sometime after mid-December. That should be just in time to pass the winter months curled up in nice warm cutlet.

Our son-in-law, who is Japanese, hosted a dinner for the family at a local Japanese restaurant. When we picked up our chopsticks, he asked the waiter for fork. “You’re Japanese,” commented my nephew. “Why are you the only one not using chopsticks?” With a laugh, my son in law replied, “I like to show off how well I can eat with a fork.”
It’s interesting to think about the way the Japanese think of us as just the place where the Toyotas go.
So I was trying to decide if my favorite type of Asian food is Chinese or Japanese…
I decided to call it a Thai.
