Animals attack Caddy shacks
Caddy Shacks sits in the small resort town of Fairfield Bay, AR which has a population of just over 2,100. Over the past year, the McDermotts have built their restaurant next to the golf course into more than just a business, with Brandi describing their customers as their “Caddy family.” That made the phone call from their manager on Aug. 31 especially difficult. Brandi says they were told that some crazy person had broken in and “completely ransacked the restaurant,” prompting her and husband Wes to drive there immediately. Inside, they found their livelihood in shambles. But as they began cleaning up, the couple spotted something that made them question their initial theory: What appeared to be paw prints on a television. Brandi went back through the restaurant’s surveillance footage and quickly discovered they weren’t dealing with a person at all. It was three raccoons.
The animals had spent roughly four hours inside the restaurant during the early morning, and Brandi’s description of their antics makes the surveillance footage sound more like an after-hours party than a break-in. “They came in from the ceiling like SEAL Team 6 with parachutes, [swung] from the lights hanging on the ceiling, played pat-a-cake with the hanging glasses, frisbee with the plates, and finally made their exit about 4 hours later, leaving behind our entire business in shambles,” Brandi says. The mess included broken dishes and glasses, ceiling damage, food and other inventory that had to be discarded because of animal contamination.
The destruction also forced the McDermotts to close Caddy Shacks during the a particularly Labor Day weekend, which Brandi says marks the final weekend of the lake season. But in the days since the unusual break-in, Brandi says something else has caught the family by surprise: the number of people rallying behind them. “Our hearts, souls, and spirits have been renewed by the outreach of love and support that we have gotten, not only within our community but all throughout the state of Arkansas,” she says. And while the McDermotts previously faced uncertainty over whether they could absorb the costs of the damage, the decontamination cleanup and continue operating. Brandi now says they have made their decision. “Our customers are our family, and they have spoken. We are pushing forward, and we WILL reopen!!” Brandi says thanks to the customers they are hopeful Caddy Shacks can reopen within the next couple of weeks.
