Alligators versus People and puppies
Danie Wright was walking 4-month-old Dax puppy behind her home in Land O’ Lakes, FL last week when the gator lunged from a mossy creek and clamped down on the pup’s collar. “I heard a squeal, and I got pulled,” Danie, a Floridian of 20 years said. “The alligator had him by his collar and dragged him, and I wasn’t gonna let go.” She said she swung her fists until the reptile released Dax. “I just punched him, punched and punched,” Danie said. “I punched him in the eye enough that he kind of let go … but his teeth dragged down my arm.” Wright was bitten on the arm during the brawl with the 5-foot gator but is now recovering from her wounds. The puppy wasn’t hurt, but Wright suffered bite wounds and is now recovering, WTSP reported. Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission later trapped the gator and removed it from the property. “Just be careful with your dogs, you know these alligators are no joke,” Wright warned. “I mean, 15 feet, he came out to get him, and I didn’t see him.”
Florida averages about eight unprovoked alligator attacks on humans each year, Attacks on pets are far more common. In July, 27-year-old optometrist Amber Perren was mauled by an 8-foot gator while wading in the St. Lucie River, according to WPTV. She survived but required multiple surgeries. Florida averages about eight unprovoked alligator attacks on humans each year, Attacks on pets are far more common. Roughly 96% of attacks caused by humans, researchers said. The researchers also said the results of the study show that alligators aren’t looking for trouble. Rather, people swimming, splashing or otherwise entering in these bodies of water triggered the reptiles’ natural response to defend itself or hunt. “The takeaway from this study is that many bites can be prevented if humans are aware of their surroundings and minimize risky behaviors, such as walking small pets near bodies of water or swimming where alligators are known to be present.” The FWC urges pet owners to keep animals on leashes and away from lakes, ponds and other bodies of water where gators may be hiding.
In the video below Michelle Smith who lives near the Lake Kissimmee State Park, wonders who is making money on the over abundance of alligators near her. We can quantify the economic value of these reptiles? One way is by looking at the sales of products harvested, such as alligator leather and meat, which are highly sought after in certain industries. In terms of the sales value of products derived from alligators, According to provisional data published just under $15 million in hides and meat were produced in 2021, the most recent year for which data are available. Alligator-related tourism and recreational activities, such as alligator watching, hunting, and eco-tourism, also generate revenue for local economies. This spending associated with alligators supports businesses, creates jobs, and boosts the overall economy, particularly in regions where alligators are found in large numbers.
Profit at what Price?
Alligators can live to be 100 years old.
Which is why there’s an increased chance that they will see you later.
I was going to cook alligator for dinner,
But then I realized I only have a croc pot.
What happens when an alligator drives the boat?
He becomes a navigator.
