English runner regimes
Daniel Fairbrother said he was practicing running when police stopped him the other night. The police were curious when they saw a runner with a refrigerator strapped to his back. “They put their blue lights on, held up the traffic and stopped me to find out what on earth was going on. Understandably they had not seen anything like it before,” Fairbrother told the BBC. “One police asked: ‘You understand we’ve got to stop you, is that a fridge on your back?'” Fairbrother explained the fridge, which he dubbed “Tallulah” in tribute to a scene from the film Cool Runnings, was helping him train for the London Marathon, where he will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon carrying a household appliance. “I would expect the police to do their job and check on someone running about with a fridge. If I got pulled over another 10 times I wouldn’t be annoyed,” Fairbrother said. “We would like to wish Daniel all the best with training for the marathon,” the police spokesman said. Fairbrother’s record attempt is also aiming to raise money for charity group Diabetes UK.
You might think that guy is pretty weird… But wait, there is more!
Tony Morrison strapped a 93-pound fridge on his back in 2011 and began running to raise money for cancer research. Since then, he has carried that same fridge a total of 2,700 miles—from 5 k’s to ultra marathons and the entire length of Great Britain. He ran 40 marathons in 40 consecutive days. Along the way, he has become known simply as Tony “The Fridge” and has raised more than $165,000. Having lost family members to cancer, Tony carries a fridge on his back as a way of demonstrating the burden of cancer on patients and their families. He hopes his personal feats of endurance might inspire cancer patients and their loved ones to persevere and overcome the extreme challenges of cancer. During his runs, he has fallen and sustained injuries, including broken limbs. He ran 800 miles on a fractured leg after learning that a leukemia patient who had planned to meet him enroute had died before they could meet. In 2014, Tony and his fridge completed the London Marathon and turned around and ran it a second time for a total of 52.4 miles. “If I can make a difference by carrying this fridge, then I will run to the four corners of the earth,”
And even More!
A Royal Marine who ran the London Marathon carrying a fridge has set a world record, the Royal Navy says. Corporal Sam Hammond, 30, completed the 26.2-mile route with the appliance, dubbed “Fridget Jones,” on his back on Sunday in four hours and 52 minutes. The Royal Navy said he beat the previous world record by 57 minutes. The record attempt will now be verified by Guinness World Records. The Cornwall-based marine was raising money for armed forces charity SSAFA. Sam had only scooped his first Guinness World Record for running a half-marathon with his fridge, weighing in at 57.9lb in Brighton in February. Sam said he “started off really well” on the London run, although he ended up “accidentally running too fast for the first 15 miles” and “cramp became my enemy” in the 21st mile. He said: “It was discipline rather than motivation that got me through… At no point did I think about ditching the fridge. “I am elated to have done it.” The 30-year-old weapons instructor, who was back at work the following day, has raised more than £4,700 for SSAFA.
