It’s Spring?

It was a nice Spring Day in the southern German town of Weiler-Simmerberg when a storm rolled in. Storms in the Spring are not that unusual, but this storm made a lot of memories for folks across Germany and France. The storms dropped rain and hail the size of tennis balls and softballs from France to Austria. The hail stones of all sizes got to depths of 18”. Pictures captured by locals Sunday showing tractors plowing the hail as if it were snow. However, temperatures in the 70s F helped quickly melt the fallen hailstones. Emergency services across the southern states of Rheinland-Palatinate and Baden-Wuerttemberg reported hundreds of calls to deal with flooded cellars, fallen trees, landslides and stranded drivers. At around 8:30 pm, a heavy gust of wind tore off part of the roof of the Stuttgart Opera while around 250 people were still inside following a song recital. No one was injured but staff were still assessing the damage caused by several thousand liters of rainwater entering the opera house, he said.

The Swiss news agency ATS reported giant hailstones up to 3” wide. In the canton of Fribourg, the police and fire brigade were called 300 times, including to rescue a class of 16 children and two adults caught in the hail. At least five people were injured in the German-speaking Swiss cantons, including a cyclist who suffered head injuries from hailstones, according to ATS.  In France, about 6 inches of hail fell in the southeastern Vosges region. in Paris, the same weather system was responsible for the Eiffel Tower being struck by lightning numerous times. “On Saturday, it was warm and muggy across much of France as a storm center moved across the northern part of the country. This helped spark thunderstorms that fed off the hot and humid conditions, leading to the flooding in Paris and to the large hail in central France.”
