Will someone adopt Murray?
Diedra Gee wanted to do something special for her husband David’s birthday. She thought about it for a while and then made the connection to get him a gift that would be giving him pleasure and lots to talk about. Deidre bought him Murray. They live on a quiet street in Arleta, California near LA and since Murray has joined them, everybody in the neighborhood talks about them. Murray is comparatively young, but he does not need to move much or make noise and still he gets all the attention, even from passersby. David spends hours talking with the neighbors and even visitors explaining Murray’s antics and history. Sadly the Gee’s are getting older and need to downsize their living quarters and it does look like their will be a place for Murray to go with them. They have been running ads trying to find him a good home, but have not gotten any real takers. “We’re still hoping someone will take him,” said David Gee, “and give him a loving home.”
Murray is 7.5 feet tall, black and very solidly built. He is carved out of black rock. Murray is a 2.5-ton replica of the monolithic Moai figures on Easter Island. “He’s sturdy and he hasn’t complained for all these years,” David joked. “He’s not much of a talker at all. And he’s waterproof.” Deidre had Murray fabricated out of volcanic rock in 2007, right in time for Christmas. However, Murray tends to be much more popular on Halloween, when neighborhood kids come to visit. The originals were carved by the indigenous people of Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, in the Polynesia sometime between 1200 and 1500, historians say. Murray, while no kid himself, is quite a bit younger than his distant relatives.
“I had always been fascinated by the Moai and I used to tease my wife that we needed one,” David said. Diedra was able to pull off the feat because she worked at an industrial pumice company at the time, which provided her with the connections and ability to obtain the material, do the carving and hire a crane to spot Murray in the front yard. David sadly admitted, “The market for secondhand Moai is limited in L.A.”
Moving Jokes
Bella called up a pet store and asked, “Could you please send me ten thousand cockroaches.”
“What in the world do you want with ten thousand cockroaches?” asked the clerk.
“Well,” replied Bella, “I am moving out of my apartment today and my lease says I have to leave the place in the same condition I found it.”
I’m a devoted beekeeper, so when my wife and I decided to move to a new house I carefully packed up my favorite hive and placed it in the car. My wife insisted, “Are you really going to put a swarm of bees into our car with us?” I thought she understood that I couldn’t leave my best queen and hive behind.
But then I saw her face, now I’m a bee leaver.
What do you call a plastic bag moving in the wind?
