Make I have coffee and a scone, Please!

Expressing courtesy and respect towards people is always appreciated, a cafe in the United Kingdom has taken it a little further. “Chai Stop” in Preston has introduced a new rule – it is charging customers double the amount of their bill if they do not behave politely. The aim of this move is to encourage consumers to be kind to the people who serve their orders. Usman Hussain who launched the tea, doughnut, street food, and dessert restaurant in March this year posted a notice stating that clients would be charged differently for the same drink based on how respectfully they order. “I think it’s a nice reminder to use your manners, because unfortunately sometimes we do need reminding. We’ve never struggled with rude customers, but since having the sign people are definitely coming in more open and having a laugh with us. To me, the most important thing in my business is to walk through the door and be treated like you’re a welcome guest in our home. It’s nice to have that respect reciprocated.” Usman got this inspirational idea from a Facebook post about an American cafe that had established the same rule a few years back. The picture was saved in his collection for two years and recently decided to test it in Chai Stop. He is using the same technique at his cafe. According to him, the staff have noticed a much friendlier environment and more customers as well.

The cafe in Virginia that started this new strategy to convince customers to be more polite offers financial rewards to those who mind their p’s and q’s. A sign outside the establishment advertises different costs for a cup of coffee depending on how courteous the customer is when ordering. A passer-by took a photo of the “Courteous Menu” posted on the sidewalk on social media with the caption: ‘Sign at a local coffee shop.’ and now it is sweeping the world. In this time of worker shortages it makes sense for the boss to encourage good treatment of the help. This isn’t the first time that a coffee shop has attempted to teach customers a lesson. A shop in the south of France incentivized patrons with a pricing scale. Fabrice Pepino, manager of the Petite Syrah, said of the rationale: “It started as a joke because at lunchtime people would come in very stressed and were sometimes rude to us when they ordered a coffee.” He added: “I know people say that French retail service can be very rude, but it’s also true that customers can be rude when they’re busy.”

Mind your manners

A young kid came up to me and said, “May I please have a cigarette?”
I was astonished. Kids these days have such great manners.

Short skirts have a tendency to make men polite.
Have you ever seen a man get on a bus ahead of one?

“Sir, how dare you belch before my wife!”
“I am sorry old man, I did not know it was her turn.”

So it’s bad manners for a person to talk with food in their mouth…
Is it also bad manners for a deaf person to talk with food in their hands?
