We got your brand

Shane Adams owned a small ranch and worked a regular job and loved the outdoors. About 8 years ago he took his horse Mongo in the trailer and went camping in Utah’s West Desert. Early on a Spring morning, when there was still snow on the ground, Mongo made a run for it. The horse was tied up outside Adam’s camping tent, but not tight enough. A herd of wild mustangs ran past the camp and Mongo took off with his newfound friends. Shane scrambled out of his tent half undressed and tried to stop him, but he was too late. Impossible or not, Adams was not about to give up on Mongo and traveled from his home in northern Utah to the West Desert every weekend for three years in search of his trusty friend. Shane called everyone he could think of including the US Bureau of Land Management to notify them of his missing horse. Eventually time and money ran out and Shane had to give up from his search and move on.

While he bought another horse, he never got rid of Mongo’s personalized halter he had specially made for his “big goofy head.” As time passed, Shane’s kids grew older. His son made up songs about missing Mongo, while he talked about Mongo in the past tense. Gone forever. Or so he thought. Shane’s hard work paid off when 8 years later BLM managers rounded up a herd of mustangs near military property. The drought was making life for the mustangs very shaky and most were skin and bones. The government people were out there to lead them to water and some food. One horse was not like the others, he fell in step like he had been trained unlike the others – and on closer inspection they saw Mongo had a brand that matched the one Adams had reported eight years ago. When he got the call that Mongo had been found, Adams thought to himself, “never in my life.” “It’s crazy he still acts like the same horse,” Adams said. “Eight years of being wild and he acts like nothing ever happened.” Mongo is about 18 years old now, a few hundred pounds underweight, but Shane said he will get him back to his fighting weight. Just the inspiration needed for Adams who was in a serious car crash a year ago that left him permanently disabled. His doctors said he would never work again, but he’s ready to prove them wrong after finding Mongo who he thought was gone for good.
