The value of education

Ask most teenagers, school is a bummer. Even for the children in stable families, school was at least a task and maybe even considered punishment. Unless… you came from another country where you were not allowed to go to school and wanted to make something of yourself. In most third world countries school is something you have to pay for, there are no or no worthwhile public schools. Parents in India and Africa sacrifice and take out loans just to get their children through primary school. While most Americans take the privilege of an education as cheap drudgery. Not so for Martha Jessenia Gutierrez-Serrano, she wanted to be somebody and something in her new country and she knew the key to being more than a maid or a dishwasher was learning to read, write and calculate.

Martha, perhaps inspired by her 46 year old mother Marta hatched a plan to get her 28 year old daughter educated and with a high school diploma. They enrolled her in the Hahnville High School in Boutte, Louisiana. In order to make that work they had to be little “Creative” with her records from Central America. They claimed Martha was 17 and had gone to elementary and junior high back home.

Martha was enrolled at the school in June 2022 and had attended for the entirety of the 2022-2023 school year, said the sheriff’s office.  “Martha was not involved in any extracurricular activities, and we are not aware of any disciplinary issues while attending school,” said the news release. “She utilized school transportation to and from school. There is no current evidence of any other criminal activity or inappropriate conduct.  Martha could “very easily be taken for a young teenager, without a doubt.” Martha got a diploma, but during the graduation ceremony somebody let the cat out of the bag and told the school board that Martha was really too old to be there.

The sheriff was called and the women were called in to face charges. The only “crime” they could come up with was “injuring public records.”  “She wanted to learn English. She wanted to become proficient in the English language.” “There was no nefarious reason behind this,” the prosecutor added. The court is waiting to decide what, if any punishment will be meted out for wanting to be educated.

Nursing schools have no teachers

As much as Martha wanted to learn English and American ways, hundreds of people want to be nurses in America. The biggest point of entry into the nursing profession are the public schools and community colleges. Many hospitals have nursing programs, but they are always filled and the hospitals are very selective. Because nurses are so highly paid and in demand, most of the nurses that would be teaching are making so much more money working that schools only have teachers to cover 30% of the classes. So as the general population gets older and sicker there are fewer and fewer nurses to take care of those in the hospital or rehab, nursing home or even in home. Wouldn’t be nice to get the supply of education to match our needs.

Miseducation

College is the opposite of kidnapping. They demand $100,000 from you or they’ll send your kid back.

In 20 years, I bet there’s going to be a college course called eye contact.

You know there is a problem with the education system when you realize that out of the 3 R’s only one begins with an ‘R.’

A Pakistani boy took admission in an American school.
Teacher: Whats your name?
Bo: Zain.
Teacher: No, now you are in America, your name is Johnny from today. Boy went home and his mother asked: How was the day Zain?
Boy: I am an American now, so call me Johnny. Mom and Dad both got offended and beat him up. Next day he was back to school all bruised.
Teacher: What happened Johnny?
Boy: Ma’m, just 6 hours after I became American, I was attacked by two Pakistani terrorists.
