Brides steal the show

Weddings are different in India. Their ceremonies may last three days and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. You invite the whole family and all the important people and feed them for days. In the last few years another tradition has grown: “Sangeet,” we call it a reception, where there is food, dancing and entertainment for a short time at a hall. A video of a bride dancing her heart out at her sangeet function is going viral on the internet. The video below shows the bride in a floor length “lehenga” grooving to the song ‘Sau Asmaan’ from the film ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ on roller skates.

As you watch her dance in the video below consider that she is wearing a dress so heavily beaded that it weighs 30 pounds by itself. The bride said, “I want to surprise Sahil Bhagat because even though he knows I roller skate, he hasn’t seen me perform ever. Do you think I can attempt it in my lehenga at the sangeet?” The attendants said – YESSSSS! We’ll make it happen. We promise to make you look comfortable, graceful and fabulous as you do this at the sangeet. Finding the right balance between emotion and practicality, we worked to constantly filter this performance to look beautiful and effortless on stage. And the rest is history!”

Another reception surprise

Typically, weddings should be delightful. The lavish cuisine, soaking up the decor, taking in the ambiance, eagerly getting up for the occasion, and donning party attire are all things to adore. What was supposed to be one of the party’s highlights turned into an avoidable drama; because   the groom did not listen to the bride. The bride told him explicitly: “No cake in the face.” But he ignored her wishes and smeared a slice of cake all over her face. The bride was furious and yelled at him before storming off to the back area of the reception hall.

Her bridesmaids and mother prevented the groom from following her. He was left sitting awkwardly at the head table while half the wedding party rushed to the bride’s aid. She stayed hidden for an hour before allowing the groom to check on her. She came out fighting mad and expressed her frustration verbally. Then she wound up and punched him in the face. By that time most of the guests had drawn sides in the argument. The whole room deteriorated into a fistfight copying the couple, with family fighting family and the wedding guests.

Wedding foibles

I received a wedding invitation.
It read, “Your presence itself is a present. We don’t want any presents at the wedding.”
After re-reading it repeatedly, I concluded that I was not invited. So I decided not to attend.

We attended the wedding of an acquaintance’s son. Because we did not know the young man nor his bride, we decided to give them a practical household gift of a fire extinguisher. Apparently, the couple mass-produced the thank you notes because we received a card saying, “Thank you very much for the nice wedding gift. We look forward to using it soon.”

The wedding was so beautiful
even the cake was in tiers.

I was at a wedding reception…

When I noticed the woman sitting opposite me kept staring until finally she spoke.
“Every time you smile, I want to take you back to my place”
In my excitement I asked if she was single.
“No” she replied. “I’m a Dentist.”
