Island Hideaway Sold!
“I wanna sell you a very big island,” in fact the biggest island in the world . If it was any bigger it would be a continent. The island has several ancient histories and civilizations, but only the last ethic group is still alive. They have their own accent which is a mash up of the natives’ words and some European influence. Most of the folks speak some English. The tourist trade is better than ever and winter sports can be enjoyed all year around. They have whales and seals and lots of fishing. The sun does not set between May 25th and July 25th so you can party hardy for a looong time. Dress warm though, because July is the only month that part of the island gets above freezing. Greenland is about 2000 miles from Denmark but only 1600 miles from the US and only 100 miles from a Canadian island.
Here is the great getaway paradise …Greenland where most of the natives speak three languages in some form and you can get a great deal on fish dinners. Ok, so why would anyone want this island that Denmark has occupied and subsidized for hundreds of years? It is not the snow and Ice or even the whale blubber or fresh fish. Greenland may have some very valuable minerals buried under hundreds of feet of ice, but most important to Greenland’s biggest fan: Greenland is the gatekeeper of the Northen passage for any international shipping or military that want to get to the Atlantic ocean from the Pacific ocean across the top of the world. So Donald Trump made a deal to run it instead of buying like one of his resort properties. Denmark still owns the land and the ice. But the US pretty much controls what happens above the ice and helps pay for the 56,000 people of all races that live there.
For thousands of years Denmark was content to just have another island with their flag on it, but nothing was growing or improving there. Now the US has promised to expand its military bases around the island and promote American interests to explore the mineral and energy possibilities that Greenland provides. It is possible that there will be a Trump Resort there after he finishes being president of the US. Denmark inherited they island about 1000 years ago back when there were still Vikings sailing out to conquer the frontiers, but the island has never been of much interest to Denmark from a commerce or military perspective. Now that arctic circle navigation is improving and some surveys have found major mineral deposits the energy and ability to develop the island is better handled by others and this leaves Denmark to be Denmark.
