Hey, you wanna go to college?

When Rutherford High School senior Jonathan Walker started applying for colleges, he said he honestly felt fear going into the process. “I would definitely say that there was like a lot of self-doubt, just in terms of where I would end up getting in,” Walker said. “And so, that was really fueled by fear that I wanted to go to a good college and so, I tried to maximize my chances by applying to as many as possible.” He definitely never expected what came from sending so many applications. Jonathan has been accepted into all 27 schools he has applied for – including Harvard, MIT and John Hopkins – and received up to $4 million dollars in scholarships. Jonathan is also on the varsity football team and the science club while maintaining a 4.85 GPA. “I’m thankful to God for Him putting me in such an amazing position, but also just realizing that like, all these results, it’s not just because of me,”

Walker said. “I feel like I’m a product of the community that has been put around me and who’s fostered my growth. Jonathan said he was always a curious kid. However, his love of academics and science would begin with his parents purchasing him a chemistry set for Christmas. “Just from there, I knew I could channel all my curiosity into this. And so, I would go through like the advised experiments where like, there’s a booklet that took you step by step,” Walker said. “And then once I exhausted that, I had a couple of chemicals leftover, so I tried to make my own experiments.” Throughout his early schooling, Walker said he had several role models and motivations, such as his fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Hayes, and his sixth-grade teacher, Mrs. McIntyre, who also inspired his love of science.  “I didn’t know where I would be in November, December, whenever I was applying,” Walker said. “But now that I finally made it, and things went so well, I’m definitely taking my time to make sure that I’m making the right choice.” He does have an idea of what he wants to do once he gets to college. Jonathan said he plans on double majoring in electrical engineering and biomedical engineering, with his major goal to develop technology to help disabled people as well as disadvantaged communities. “I just want people to have like a greater quality of life because I feel like if they’re able to focus more on just forming meaningful and joyful connections, instead of their own health, they can really explore what it means to contribute to life and just make everybody else’s life better,” Walker said. “And so, if I can facilitate that, it’s honestly a dream come true.”

College Confusion

‘Forget everything you learned in college. You won’t need it working here.’
‘But I never went to college.’
‘Well then, I’m sorry. You are underqualified to work here.’

College orientation talking to male students:
“Access to the women’s dorms is strictly prohibited. If someone is caught there for the first time, they will suffer a fine of 100 dollars. The second offence will involve a 300 dollar fine. Getting caught there for the third time will cost you a hefty fine of 500 dollars.”
Suddenly, a student in the back raises his hand and asks:
“How much for a semester pass?”

Thank you, student loans, for helping me get through college.
I don’t think I can ever repay you.
