Fun with Chinese neighbors

Mister Gu lived next door to the Zhong family in rural China. Along the border between their houses was a row of trees. Mr. Gu cut down some trees on the border of his and his neighbor’s property, according to China Daily. However, they didn’t go down well with Zhong. You see, the ownership of the trees is a bit of a blurry subject. According to Chinese media, the trees were the property of Mr. Zhong. However, other reports have stated that the trees did, in fact, belong to Gu. The Zhong household strongly believed they were entitled to the trees. So, Zhong’s wife took upon herself to have the trees towed off Gu’s property and into theirs. Mr. Gu was very angry and insulted, as the Zhong’ had stolen the timber for themselves.  Since the courts did not resolve the trees’ ownership, Gu decided to dole out some DIY justice.

Later, in the dead of night, Gu snuck into the Zhong family’s property. Gu poked around in the dark with his high power LED flashlight. When GU went into the big Zhong chicken coup with the bright light, the chickens panicked and all piled into the opposite corner of the building on top of each other. In the squawking and frightened scrambling around 500 of the chickens got trampled to death. Now it was Zhong’s turn to be mighty ticked off, but unlike his neighbor, he went to the police. Chinese police officers apprehended Gu and after a brief investigation, ordered him to pay yuan $436 for the damages. Gu, however, wasn’t happy about having to pay and felt the investigation wasn’t carried out fairly.

Out for revenge, Gu went sneaking on his neighbor’s property on another night. This time it was worse. Gu managed to scare Zhong’s chickens for a second time. This stampede was even deadlier than the one before: an estimated 640 chickens died. The court in Hengyang province agreed with Zhong. The judges ruled that Gu had intentionally caused property loss to Zhong, authorities estimate that the 1,100 dead chickens set Zhong back nearly $2,000. At the trial the court noted that Mr. Gu showed “remorse” for his behavior. Judges sentenced Gu only to six months in prison, plus a year on probation. Chinese sources estimate the value of the leveled trees was a lot less than 1100 chickens and 6 months in jail.
