Hey, where’s Luigi?

Talk about team players: One employee of the Ciaccio hospital in the Catanzaro, Italy decide to skip work in 2005 and stayed out, but on the payroll for 15 years. For the sake of this story, “Luigi” now a 67 year old employee is accused of threatening his manager to stop her from filing a disciplinary report against him. His first manager later retired and his ongoing absence was never noticed by her successor or human resources. He is now being investigated for fraud, extortion and abuse of office, Italian news agency Ansa reports. He was reportedly paid $647,300 in total over the years he is thought not to have been working. The employee had civil service protection. Six managers at the hospital are also being investigated in connection with the alleged absenteeism. The arrests are the result of a lengthy police investigation into absenteeism and suspected fraud in the Italian public sector. “Italy’s finance police have concluded an investigation into 29 Sicilian public sector employees, which revealed they skipped work an average of 40 percent of the time. “One month,” the police asserted, “the rate of absenteeism shot up to 85 percent.”

When my boss asked me why I showed up late for our Zoom meeting, I told him that he wouldn’t believe the network traffic.

What is the difference between a chess player and government worker? A chess player makes a move every now and then.

Sgt.: “Private.”
Pvt.: “Yes sir”
Sgt.: You failed to show up for the camouflage class yesterday.”
Pvt.: “How do you know that, sir?”

My boss said, “I find it highly suspicious that you are only sick on weekdays.”
I said, “It must be my weekend immune system.”
