See through bathrooms
Tokyo parks are attracting extra attention for their unusual new features: public toilets with transparent walls. The restrooms feature see-through walls that turn opaque when a user enters the facility and locks the door. The installations are part of The Tokyo Toilet project, which is redesigning 17 of the city’s public bathrooms with different designers. The Japanese have long been known for their, well, potty behavior. From a high-tech toilet museum to airport dog toilets, bathroom culture has been a top priority. “This allows users to check the cleanliness and whether anyone is using the toilet from the outside.” Users said remembering to lock the doors is of extra importance, since a user inside the facility can’t tell whether the walls appear transparent or frosted from the outside. Each facility comprises three separate cubicles – a male, female and handicapped toilet – which are divided by mirrored walls. “At night, the facility lights up the park like a beautiful lantern.”
