Gem trader does well
A known gem trader, who wants to remain anonymous, hired some guys to dig a new well behind his house. He lives in the southern city of Ratnapura, known as Sri Lanka’s “City of Gems.” This was his lucky day. Workers in the backyard dug up a 2.5 million-carat sapphire cluster. The group weighed 1,124 pounds. He named it the “Serendipity Sapphire,” coming in at a staggering 39 inches long and 28 inches wide. Gamage, a gem trader, said some stones that came loose from the cluster were tested and confirmed to be high-quality star sapphires. This is the world’s largest star sapphire cluster and valued at up to $100 million on the international market. Sri Lanka is known for its gem finds. Other large sapphires have been found in the country like the “Blue Belle of Asia,” a 392-carat sapphire that sold at auction for $17.5 million. Another was the “Star of India,” a 563-carat star sapphire on display at the American Museum of Natural History. In 1964, amateur jewel thieves broke into the museum, used a glass cutter and duct tape to open the stone’s display box, and made off with it.
