Chickens out of the cold

Nancy Kearns was a leader of the knitting club at Fuller Village, a retirement home in Milton, MA. The ladies always wanted to provide a service to the broader community. They were introduced to a group that kept chickens as part of the Mary M.B. Wakefield Charitable Trust. The Wakefield chickens were a bred from Malaysia and shed their feathers annually and grow new plumage in the winter months. So they cooked up the idea of the knitters making sweaters for the chickens to keep them warmer in the winter. The ladies knit little sweaters in custom sizes for the chickens and even provide assorted colors. “I don’t think in my wildest dreams I ever thought anybody made sweaters for chickens,” said Barbara Widmayer, 76, who started knitting when she was 15 years old. “It was actually very calming to me to work on this.” Another knitter, 76-year-old Libby Kaplan, said the experience has helped her to overcome her fear of birds. The chickens seem to like their sweaters: Egg production has jumped noticeably since the birds began wearing them. It’s got some members of the club wondering what exotic project to take on next. Someone gave Nancy an article about a need for blankets at an elephant refuge in India…

Don’t get eggcited

What did seven dwarfs name their chicken?
Egg White.

I steal my eggs from my next-door neighbor.
I prefer them poached.

My son asked for a strange Christmas present this year.
It’s really cheap though, so I don’t mind. I’m not sure why he wants an “eggs box” though.

I had a hen who could count her own eggs.
She was a mathemachicken.
