Getting high in Sweden

Quirin Herterich, was the first to cross the finish line, followed by his compatriots Lukas Irmler, Ruben Langer and Friedi Kuehne. The four German tightrope walkers, combine mountaineering, climbing and slacklining. They walked a mile and a quarter barefoot across a wire stretched between two mountain tops to set a new world record. They were 1900 feet above the valley below. The four “highliners” wore watches with GPS plotters to measure and verify the distance traveled between the two anchors. At this time of year, midsummer, the sun does not set, giving tightrope walkers plenty of time to try and break the world record. It took the crew two days of hard work to install the cable. The team set up camps on both mountain peaks and pulled a line going down themselves on one side and using a drone to descend a rope on the other side because the mountainside was too steep. The ropes were then tied together, stretched and then used to pull the cable on which the tightrope walkers walk barefoot. “I just focused on being very slow, being extremely clean and just reaching the end,” said Herterich.
