Singing Samoans Surprise Surroundings

While Sydney Australia is having a political revolution over locking down 900,000 people for a positive covid test rate of 1.3 people per thousand, in Hobart hundreds of Samoan contract workers are singing, even in quarantine. Several hundred workers are serving their 2 weeks in a hotel before they are allowed to work in the fields and factories in the country. Australia has shut its international border to non-citizens, but it has allowed just over 1,500 people from the Pacific Islands to temporarily enter and work on farms to ease labor shortages. Those flying to Australia under the Pacific Labor Scheme are entitled to the same rights as Australian workers – including the minimum wage. They are also guaranteed a certain number of working hours per week and their visa cannot be canceled by employers in Australia participating in the scheme. Taking their lead from someone conducting outside the hotel, they sang the Samoan hymn E Sili, sili lou Atua (How great is our God) along with cries of “Hallelujah!” Which is expressing thankfulness for everything one’s eyes can see; especially the chance to make a living in Australia.
