Do you smell chicken fat?
In the middle of Monday afternoon police in New Albany, Mississippi investigated an auto accident where a car had spun out and off the road. The investigating officer reported that the road was very slippery in spots. “When officers arrived, they found a considerable amount of liquid on the roadway, causing a very slippery condition,” Chief Whiteside explained. Police, paramedics, and firefighters responding to the accident and calls about oily roads began to pour in. It seems a truck was carrying chicken fat to a bio diesel facility to be used as a biofuel. Apparently, during loading they left the top hatch of the truck open. “When the truck would stop and start at lights significant amounts of product would splash from the trailer and out on the ground.” In all, Whiteside estimated that at least 500 gallons of chicken fat may have ended up on area roads. In the short term, sand and dirt were spread on the slick patches to make them less slippery and lime was added to deal with the smell until cleanup crews came out to wash away the whole mess. The fat clean up crew included the Mississippi DOT, the bio diesel facility, county officials, and the trucking company. It reportedly continued late into the evening.
