Doing what a spider can

Spiderman comes alive in several ways at Disneyland’s Avengers Campus as you can see in the video below. Years of work and millions of dollars went into the design and creation of this robot that moves arms and legs and torso like a real athlete as it flies through the air twisting and turning from one side of the Spiderman exhibit building to the other. Two men worked for years as robot engineers to mimic the actions and poses of a human as their device climbs, rolls, jumps runs and flies. Tony Dohi and his team have developed a machines that can greatly simplify the animation of superheroes. Taking their flights and fights from highly computer driven artwork to a robot that looks and acts the part human for filming movie stunts. Immediately upon entering the superhero sector of the park, guests are served what Fields calls a “robot sandwich.” On the roof of a sleek industrial building that houses Web Slingers — an interactive Spider-Man simulator ride — a human actor dressed as the friendly neighborhood Avenger somersaults, backflips, cartwheels and charms the crowd before running offstage to make way for a mechanical twin.
